It is an artificial root made of titanium metal that is screwed onto the jawbone. Because of this material it is able in most cases to integrate with bone without being recognized as a foreign object in your body after it is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of the natural tooth. The fusing of the implant to the bone is a process that typically takes 6 months.
Once integrated to the jawbone it is the closest thing to mimicking a natural tooth because it stands on its own without affecting the nearby teeth and has great stability. An artificial tooth which is typically made out of porcelain which has similar properties as your original tooth is then integrated on top of the implant. Implants are a great and effective long-term solution for people who are missing teeth and function and feel like real teeth.
A traditional dental bridge consists of a false tooth or teeth being held in place by dental crowns that have been cemented onto each of the abutment teeth. A traditional bridge is the most popular type of dental bridge and can be used when you have natural and healthy teeth on both sides of the gap created by your missing tooth or teeth. During the treatment the 2 healthy ones are filed down to prepare them for the bridge. These anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth. Impressions are then taken to create a model of your teeth.
The model is used to custom-make the artificial tooth (or teeth) and 2 crowns as a single piece. This piece is called a bridge. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and a false tooth/teeth in between. These false teeth are called pontics and are generally made out of porcelain. Bridges help distribute the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth thus preventing remaining teeth from drifting out of position.
A fixed dental prosthesis is a dental restoration solution designed to permanently replace one or more missing teeth. Unlike removable prostheses, these are securely anchored in the jaw or affixed to adjacent teeth, thus offering stability and comfort comparable to that of natural teeth.
The fixed dental prosthesis is often made of high-quality ceramic or zirconia to mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth. It can be attached either by dental implants or by crowns that rest on existing teeth. This technique not only offers aesthetic advantages by filling in empty spaces, but it is also beneficial for masticatory function and overall oral health.
By opting for a fixed dental prosthesis, you are investing in a durable solution that requires little maintenance, aside from regular oral hygiene practices. The installation process is generally done in several stages, including the preparation of existing teeth, taking impressions, and the final placement. Fixed dental prostheses are custom-made to fit perfectly in your mouth and are an excellent option for those looking for both an aesthetic and functional tooth replacement solution.
If you are faced with tooth loss and are seeking a more permanent option than removable prostheses, a fixed dental prosthesis could be the ideal solution for you.
